5 longevity habits for a healthy, energetic summer

For many people, summer equals vacation, outdoor terraces and long days outside. For your body, warm weather means extra work. To keep your core temperature around 37 °C, it must continuously dissipate heat, regulate fluid balance and keep recovery processes running. That requires energy (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024).

From a longevity perspective this is interesting. Your body is constantly engaged in maintenance and repair. On hot summer days there is additional strain. By adjusting your lifestyle accordingly, you support these natural processes and help your body continue to function optimally.

1. Prevent dehydration

Why do you sometimes feel more tired, dizzy or less sharp on hot days? That is often because you lose fluids without noticing.

Sweating is the main way your body cools itself. In the process you lose not only water but also sodium. If this fluid loss is not adequately replenished, the volume of circulating blood decreases. Your heart must work harder to deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles, organs and the brain. That can make you feel more fatigued, give you a headache or make exertion feel harder (CDC, 2024).

Many people wait to drink until they feel thirsty. Yet thirst is not always a reliable indicator of your fluid needs. By the time you feel thirsty, a fluid deficit may already have developed.

Practical tips

  • Drink regularly throughout the day.
  • Replenish fluids not only with water but also through vegetables and fruit.
  • Consider an electrolyte drink for prolonged sweating.

2. Adjust your training, not your healthy habits

Regular exercise is one of the most powerful pillars of a healthy lifestyle. It supports the heart and blood vessels, helps preserve muscle mass, improves metabolism and contributes to healthy brain function.

During exercise your muscles produce heat. On hot summer days your body must dissipate that heat while continuing to perform. As a result your heart rate rises faster and the same workout often feels harder (CDC, 2024).

That does not mean you should exercise less, but that you should be smarter about the conditions. By adjusting the intensity or timing of your workouts, your body needs to spend less energy on cooling and more capacity remains available for recovery. For some people creatine can be a valuable addition. Creatine can help preserve muscle mass, especially when combined with regular resistance training.

  • Schedule intense workouts early in the morning or later in the evening.
  • Choose a lower training intensity during heat.
  • Take sufficient rest breaks.

3. Protect your skin and natural repair capacity

Sunlight has several positive effects. For example, daylight helps regulate your biological clock. At the same time, sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can damage skin cells.

UV radiation generates free radicals. These are unstable molecules that can damage proteins, fats and DNA. Fortunately, your body has efficient repair mechanisms that fix much of this damage. With prolonged or intense exposure, however, these systems may not keep up. Over time that damage can accumulate, contributing to premature skin aging and increasing the risk of various skin problems (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024).

Precisely because these repair processes are so important, there is much scientific interest in compounds that may play a supporting role. One example is NMN. NMN is a precursor of NAD+, a molecule involved in cellular energy production and various repair mechanisms in the body. Good sun protection, however, always remains the foundation.

Practical tips

  • Seek shade as much as possible between about 11:00 and 15:00.
  • Wear protective clothing, a hat and possibly sunglasses.
  • Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

4. Consider sleep your most important recovery period

Why do you sleep so poorly on warm nights? It is because your body needs to cool down somewhat in order to fall asleep well.

Normally your core temperature drops slightly when you go to sleep. If the bedroom remains too warm, that process is impaired. You fall asleep more slowly, wake up more often and spend less time in deep sleep.

Important recovery processes take place during deep sleep. Hormones are regulated, the immune system supports tissue repair, and the brain clears waste products that have accumulated during the day (Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, 2024). Several poor nights in a row can lead to less energy, worse concentration and slower recovery capacity.
