Meta-analysis (research): resveratrol enhances antioxidants in type 2 diabetes

Introduction

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is on the rise worldwide and is characterized by chronically high blood sugar. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that more than 10% of adults suffer from it and that this share will continue to rise in the coming decades. In addition to a healthy lifestyle, many people choose natural supplements to support their health. Resveratrol— a natural polyphenol found in the skin of red grapes and in Japanese knotweed—is popular for its powerful antioxidant properties.

Study Design

Scientists analysed recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to investigate whether resveratrol influences inflammation and oxidation markers in T2DM patients. They searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and the Cochrane Library up to November 2024 and selected only RCTs in which patients with T2DM took resveratrol and had comparable placebo groups. Ultimately, six high-quality studies were included, conducted in Mexico, Pakistan, Italy and Iran, with doses ranging from 40 mg to 1,000 mg and lasting 4 to 24 weeks.

Results: Antioxidants Increase

The meta-analysis showed that resveratrol increases some antioxidants. Supplement users had significantly higher levels of glutathione peroxidase (SMD = 0.38) and catalase (SMD = 0.33). Both enzymes protect cells against free radicals. No significant change was found for other markers such as interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde. The researchers conclude that resveratrol reduces inflammation and oxidative stress in T2DM patients to some extent, but larger, multicenter studies are needed to confirm these findings.

What Can Resveratrol Do For You?

Resveratrol belongs to the polyphenol family and activates a group of proteins called sirtuins (including SIRT1) that play a role in the lifespan of cells. It helps protect the body against oxidative stress and supports cardiovascular health. Moreover, resveratrol works synergistically with the molecule NMN: resveratrol activates sirtuins while NMN raises NAD+ levels so these proteins can function optimally. That is exactly why our Resveratrol capsules 250 mg are so popular: they contain >98 % pure trans-resveratrol of natural origin. Want to experience the synergy? Combine resveratrol with our NMN supplements for maximal activation of sirtuins.

Conclusion

This meta-analysis suggests that resveratrol can increase antioxidant enzymes in people with type 2 diabetes, contributing to a better balance between oxidants and antioxidants. Although the overall evidence is currently limited, the findings offer perspective for people who want to support their metabolic health in a natural way. Use resveratrol as a complement to a healthy diet, exercise and consultation with a doctor.
