Research: NMN supplementation improves sleep quality

Research has been conducted on the effect of a 12-week intake of NMN on sleep quality, fatigue, and physical performance in older Japanese adults.

Summary of Results:

NMN supplementation enhances sleep quality and reduces sleepiness in adults aged 65 and older. Improved sleep contributes to better cognition and physical performance, potentially enriching life outlook and increasing healthy lifespan in older adults.

Study Summary:

Aging adults may experience deteriorating sleep quality and physical or mental fatigue, which can lead to a decrease in quality of life and an increased mortality rate. This study examined the effects of time-dependent intake of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) on sleep quality, fatigue, and physical performance in older adults. The study included 108 participants, divided into four groups (NMN_AM; before noon, NMN_PM; after noon, Placebo_AM, Placebo_PM). For 12 weeks, each group received daily NMN (250 mg) or placebo. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and fatigue using the "Jikaku-sho shirabe" questionnaire. Physical performance was measured using grip strength, 5-time sit-to-stand (5-STS), timed up and go, and 5-meter usual walking distance. Remarkable interactions were observed between 5-STS and sleepiness. After the intervention, all groups showed significant improvement in 5-STS and reduced sleepiness in the NMN_PM and Placebo_PM groups during mid- and post-intervention, compared to pre-intervention. The NMN_PM group showed the greatest improvement in 5-STS (d = 0.72) and sleepiness (d = 0.64). Overall, afternoon NMN intake significantly improved lower limb function and reduced sleepiness in older adults. These findings suggest the potential of NMN to maintain physical performance and reduce fatigue in older adults.
